What Surgery Centers can Do to Help Prevent Blood Clots
According to a recent study published in the journal Thrombosis Research, 1 in 100 patients who underwent surgery developed a life-threatening blood clot or deep vein thromboembolism (DVT). Additionally, 80% of those patients who developed a DVT within 90 days of discharge required additional medical procedures and monitoring. Fortunately, there is something surgical teams can do to help prevent blood clots from forming beyond medication, leg exercises, and compression stockings.??Developing Blood Clots can Be Life-Threatening?While a DVT is not always life-threatening, there is always a risk of the blood clot breaking loose and traveling to the lungs and causing a pulmonary embolism (PE). After a DVT diagnosis, many people endure chronic swelling, pain, or scaling. However, the CDC estimates that up to 100,000 people die each year of a DVT and up to 30% of those diagnosed with a DVT will die within 30 days.
